Spain Opens Applications for Record €2.56 Billion Student Scholarship Program
The Ministry of Education and Vocational Training has opened applications for the 2026/2027 academic year, offering a record 2.559 billion euros in scholarships to support nearly one million students.
The Ministry of Education and Vocational Training has opened applications for the 2026/2027 academic year scholarships. Students have until 3:00 p.m. on May 18 to submit their requests. This year, the government has allocated a record budget of 2.559 billion euros, aiming to support nearly one million students nationwide.
The updated policy aims to better reflect the current financial challenges facing families. Key changes include extending scholarship eligibility to part-time university students and raising wealth thresholds by 10% to help offset the impact of inflation. Additionally, academic requirements have been relaxed for students with disabilities, and extra financial support is available for students in Ceuta and Melilla who must travel to pursue their studies.
The scholarship structure remains consistent: it includes a base grant of 300 euros (350 euros for Basic Vocational Training students) plus variable amounts. These additional funds are based on family income—up to 1,700 euros—and residency costs, which can reach 2,700 euros. The Ministry has also made these scholarships compatible with "Medrano Scholarships," which provide up to 900 euros per month to support students moving between universities.
To apply, students should visit the Ministry’s electronic office, where they can also track the status of their application. Please note that students living in Catalonia must apply through their regional government’s portal due to a recent transfer of administrative powers.
Ultimately, these scholarships are designed to ensure that a student’s financial background does not prevent them from accessing higher education. By combining income-based criteria with academic performance standards, the government aims to maintain equal opportunities for all students despite the rising cost of living.
