Spain Launches Third Annual National Sandwich Championship
Hospitality businesses across Spain, including twelve from the Canary Islands, are competing in the third annual Spanish Sandwich Championship to determine the nation's best culinary creation through a mix of public voting and expert evaluation.
Spanish cuisine is currently celebrating the humble sandwich, a trend highlighted by the launch of the third annual Spanish Sandwich Championship. The competition, which runs from April 1st to April 26th, sees hospitality businesses across the country competing for national recognition.
The Canary Islands are well-represented this year, with a dozen establishments vying for both the regional title and the overall "Best Sandwich in Spain 2026" award. Six of these businesses are based in Tenerife, further cementing the island’s growing reputation in the national culinary scene.
The judging process balances public opinion with professional expertise. Customers can vote on the official event website, rating sandwiches based on bread texture, ingredient harmony, presentation, and overall taste. To encourage participation, voters who also follow the event’s social media accounts are entered into a raffle to win an electronic device.
The final decision, however, lies with a panel of culinary experts and food critics. They will review the entries to select the finalists, leading to a blind tasting on May 5th. This rigorous, impartial format aims to elevate the sandwich, treating it as a serious subject of professional gastronomy.
