Southern Holiday Homes See 5.5% Drop in Availability, Istac Reports
The Canary Islands' southern region experienced a 5.5% decline in holiday accommodation between October 2024 and October 2025, with popular areas like Adeje and Arona seeing significant drops, while southeastern towns such as Arafo and Candelaria reported increases.
Holiday homes in the South have seen a shift after years of steady growth. Between October 2024 and October 2025, the region lost 3,067 holiday spots, a 5.5% drop in available places. This is according to new figures from the Canary Islands Institute of Statistics (Istac). Despite this decrease, there are still plenty of holiday beds available, with a total of 52,374.
This change is most noticeable in the popular tourist areas of Adeje, Arona, and Granadilla. While these towns still hold most of the South's holiday accommodation, they have seen a reduction in their offerings over the last year. Adeje has lost 136 homes and 1,065 beds, while Arona has fewer homes by 111 and beds by 1,022.
Granadilla has experienced the biggest percentage drop, with 108 fewer homes and 490 fewer places.
However, the growth in holiday homes hasn't been the same everywhere. This year, the biggest increases are not in the main tourist spots but in the southeastern part of the region.
Arafo has seen the largest percentage increase. It now has 47 homes, up from 39, which is a 20.5% rise. This has added 44 new places, a 23.6% increase compared to last year, though its total number of places is still small.
Candelaria has added 72 new places, a 4.5% increase, and its number of homes has gone up from 394 to 401, a 1.7% rise. Fasnia has kept the same number of homes (73) but has increased its places to 295, adding 1.4% more.
On the other hand, Arona has seen the largest decrease in absolute numbers. However, it still accounts for 32.8% of the South's holiday capacity, with 17,184 beds.
