As the August 12 solar eclipse approaches, experts are urging the public to secure certified, undamaged eye protection from reputable retailers to prevent permanent vision damage amid widespread stock shortages.
With the solar eclipse approaching on August 12, astronomy fans and the general public are scrambling to find the right eye protection. High demand has already caused major retailers to run low on stock, so it is a good idea to check if your local store has glasses in stock before making the trip.
Retailers like Aldi, Eroski, Alcampo, and Carrefour have been selling solar observation glasses, typically priced between 1.49 and 1.99 euros. Some stores, such as Carrefour, also offer three-packs from the brand Bresser for 8.90 euros. However, many of these are already sold out online, and availability varies by location.
The National Geographic Institute is urging everyone to prioritize safety. To protect your eyes, glasses must carry the CE mark and meet the international standard EN ISO 12312-2:2015. Experts warn that regular sunglasses, X-rays, or homemade filters are not safe. Looking directly at the sun without proper protection can cause solar retinopathy—a permanent eye injury that may not cause immediate pain, making it easy to accidentally stare at the sun for too long.
Before using your glasses, inspect them carefully. If the lenses are scratched, punctured, or damaged in any way, do not use them, even if they are certified. This is especially important for those in the Canary Islands, where the eclipse will be partially visible—reaching about 70% coverage in Tenerife. During this time, you must keep your protective glasses on throughout the entire event.
Given the current shortages, experts recommend buying your glasses from opticians or authorized retailers to ensure they are genuine and safe. Do not risk your eyesight with unverified or improvised equipment.
