Geological activity in the Canary Islands is back in the spotlight after a series of small earthquakes were detected near Tenerife. According to the National Geographic Institute (IGN), three tremors occurred in the Atlantic waters early Friday morning, August 14. While these events are considered normal for the region, they highlight the importance of the islands' constant seismic monitoring.
The first tremor struck at 2:12 a.m. with a magnitude of 2.2, occurring 28 kilometers deep northeast of the island. A second, smaller quake of magnitude 1.4 followed at 3:58 a.m., located 23 kilometers deep west of Puerto de la Cruz. The sequence ended at 5:42 a.m. with a 1.8-magnitude tremor in the channel between Tenerife and Gran Canaria, at a depth of 12 kilometers.
Frequent, low-intensity earthquakes are a natural part of the Canary Islands' volcanic landscape. Because the archipelago sits on complex oceanic crust, energy release is common, though most of these tremors are too weak for residents to feel. The IGN’s work is vital, as it not only collects data but also monitors for any unusual activity that might signal a change beneath the surface.
