Series of Micro-Earthquakes Recorded in Canary Islands
The National Geographic Institute recorded four low-intensity micro-seisms in the Canary Islands on Tuesday morning, noting that the minor tremors are normal for the region and caused no damage.
Geological activity in the Canary Islands is back in the spotlight after a series of small earthquakes were recorded early Tuesday morning, August 11, 2026. The National Geographic Institute (IGN) detected four low-intensity tremors, which, while too faint for the public to feel, serve as a reminder of the region’s active volcanic and tectonic nature.
These "micro-seisms" measured between 1.6 and 1.9 on the magnitude scale. The activity was split between land and sea: sensors picked up tremors in the Tenerife municipalities of Candelaria and Guía de Isora, as well as in the waters between the islands.
Experts emphasize that this level of seismic activity is normal for the Canary Islands. The constant movement of tectonic plates and underground magmatic systems frequently produces these types of minor tremors. There have been no reports of damage or injuries, and the activity remains well within the expected range for the region. The IGN continues to monitor the area closely to track any changes in these patterns.
