A repeat offender in Santa Cruz de Tenerife has received a five-year prison sentence for a series of home burglaries, marking his 21st conviction and prompting a complex judicial review of his cumulative time served.

A repeat offender in Santa Cruz de Tenerife has been convicted for the 21st time, once again highlighting the challenges the Spanish judicial system faces when dealing with habitual criminals.

Following a plea deal with the Public Prosecutor's Office, the defendant’s sentence was reduced from seven and a half years to five. Now, judges must perform the complex task of consolidating this new sentence with the 17 years of prison time the individual was already serving.

The latest conviction stems from three home burglaries committed between March and April 2024. In these incidents, the defendant gained entry to private properties by climbing fences or forcing open doors and windows. During one break-in, he was caught by a resident while inside a room. He managed to steal various items, including electronics, cash, jewelry, and several kilograms of scrap metal, such as copper and brass. Because the victims did not pursue civil claims for damages, the court focused solely on determining the length of the prison sentence.

This case underscores the difficulty of applying the Penal Code to long-term repeat offenders. The Tenerife court is now tasked with its third review of the defendant’s total sentence, a technical process required to ensure the final punishment remains legally proportionate after more than two decades of criminal activity.
