Police in La Laguna have arrested a repeat offender following a surge of burglaries in the Tejina district, aided by resident cooperation and incriminating social media footage.

Residents of the Tejina district in La Laguna have reached a breaking point due to a recent surge in burglaries targeting homes and farms. The wave of crime has sparked widespread neighborhood concern, but recent cooperation between locals and police—aided by video surveillance—has led to the arrest of a repeat offender who had been terrorizing the area.

The suspect, a 45-year-old man with a long criminal history, was known to local authorities and lived in the neighborhood where he committed his crimes. His activities were both bold and frequent. In one notable incident on March 4, he scaled a perimeter wall to steal three animals worth an estimated 9,000 euros. Other crimes involved breaking into greenhouses and climbing onto rooftops to enter homes, resulting in the theft of cash, high-end electronics, and watches.

The investigation, a joint effort between the La Laguna Local Police and the National Police, was helped by the suspect’s own carelessness. He had posted videos on social media wearing a mask that was later identified in security footage from the crime scenes. Residents believe his behavior, potentially linked to drug dependency, caused the situation to escalate. Following a foot chase along Camino Cuarzo last Thursday, officers managed to arrest the man despite his physical resistance.

This case highlights the ongoing challenge of dealing with repeat offenders. The suspect had an active arrest warrant and had reoffended just 24 hours after a previous release. The constant threat of crime, which often occurred during the day, left residents feeling so vulnerable that they began sharing images of the robberies among themselves as a form of self-defense. The man is now in judicial custody after receiving a medical evaluation following his arrest.
