
Seismic Activity Declines in Northeastern Tenerife Following Minor Tremors
Geological activity in northeastern Tenerife is stabilizing as the National Geographic Institute reports a steady decline in seismic tremors following a brief period of minor earthquake activity.
Geological activity in northeastern Tenerife is returning to normal following a brief period of instability earlier this week. According to the National Geographic Institute (IGN), seismic activity around the Anaga massif is steadily decreasing, suggesting that the energy from the recent tremors is dissipating.
The IGN recorded two minor earthquakes between Thursday and Friday, both measuring 1.7 in magnitude. The first occurred late Thursday near Tegueste at a depth of 25 kilometers, while the second was detected offshore north of the island early Friday morning. Neither quake was strong enough to be felt by residents, confirming experts' assessments that these are low-energy aftershocks posing no threat to public safety.
These tremors follow a sequence that began last Wednesday, when four seismic events were recorded. Two of those reached magnitudes of 3.6 and 3.0 and were felt by residents in several areas, including Santa Cruz de Tenerife, La Laguna, Tacoronte, El Rosario, and Puerto de la Cruz.
Scientists are urging the public to remain calm, noting that the current activity in the Anaga area is not linked to the island’s volcanic systems. Such events are common in volcanic regions like the Canary Islands and are typically caused by minor tectonic shifts. While these movements can be unsettling, experts confirm there is no magmatic threat. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely to ensure ongoing safety.
