Santiago del Teide Council and Unions Deadlocked Over Pay and Scheduling Proposals
Santiago del Teide’s local government and labor unions remain at an impasse following the rejection of proposed work schedules and overtime pay revisions for municipal staff.
Tensions between the Santiago del Teide local government and labor unions have reached a breaking point after the council’s latest proposals were rejected. The local administration expressed frustration over the union’s refusal to accept a new work schedule, which included a 35-hour work week and a reduction to 30 hours during holidays.
The disagreement goes beyond scheduling. The CSIF union has also turned down the council’s offer to revise pay for overtime and extra shifts for the Local Police. The council argued that this proposal was a necessary update, offering a tiered pay scale based on rank and timing. Under this plan, hourly gross pay would range from 35.20 euros for C1-category officers to 36.20 euros for headquarters commanders on certain days.
This standoff highlights the difficulty of balancing improved staff conditions with a limited municipal budget. While the City Council maintains that its offers are a significant step forward for employees, the union’s rejection suggests a deep disagreement over how these services should be valued.
Despite the current stalemate, the local government says it remains open to further talks. However, officials warned that any future deal must remain within strict financial and legal limits to ensure both fiscal responsibility and the quality of public services.
