Santiago del Teide Boosts Infrastructure and Local Economy Through Strategic Initiatives
Santiago del Teide is revitalizing its local economy through critical water infrastructure upgrades, initiatives to integrate agriculture with tourism, and a year-round calendar of cultural and sporting events.
Santiago del Teide is currently undergoing a major transformation, focusing on upgrading essential infrastructure and boosting the local economy.
According to El Día de Canarias, the City Council has finally resolved a long-standing issue regarding the area’s water supply. After years of planning and administrative hurdles, a new electrical connection from ENDESA has allowed the San Francisco and El Cruce reservoirs to become fully operational. This improvement ensures a more stable supply of desalinated water and supports the region’s "zero-discharge" environmental strategy, which is vital for protecting the coastline and ensuring the local treatment plant works efficiently.
Beyond infrastructure, the local government is working to link the primary sector with the tourism industry. By promoting a unique local food brand, the council is encouraging hotels to source products from nearby farmers, strengthening the local economy. Additionally, new training programs are being introduced to help younger generations enter traditional fields like winemaking and beekeeping, helping to protect these trades from economic instability.
The municipality is also using a busy calendar of events to attract tourists throughout the year, rather than just during peak seasons. Beyond the cultural celebrations for Canary Islands Day (May 29–31), the council is hosting events like the "Subida del Panadero" on August 8 and a swimming race between La Arena and Puerto de Santiago on July 11. These activities, part of the III Tenerife Vive+ Santiago del Teide Festival, are designed to draw visitors during quieter months and provide a direct boost to local businesses.
