Santa Úrsula Moves to Renovate and Reopen Long-Closed Municipal Pool
The Santa Úrsula City Council has initiated technical planning to renovate and reopen the La Quinta municipal swimming pool, which has remained closed and in disrepair since 2019.
After five years of closure, the municipal swimming pool in Santa Úrsula is finally moving toward a reopening. The City Council has begun drafting the technical plans needed to tender a full renovation of the facility, which has been shut down since June 2019.
The pool, located in the La Quinta residential area, closed after the previous operator, Eulen, ceased management due to financial difficulties. Since then, the building has fallen into significant disrepair. Technical reports now confirm that a simple reopening is impossible; instead, the site requires a major overhaul and expansion to meet modern safety and operational standards.
Progress was stalled for years due to administrative gridlock, which even led to the loss of a one-million-euro grant from the Canary Islands government in 2022. However, recent mediation between the City Council, the Compensation Board, and local landowners has finally resolved these issues. Mayor Juan Acosta’s administration now has a clear path forward to restart the project.
This situation highlights a common challenge with public-private partnerships: when a private company fails, the municipality is often left with a deteriorating facility and complex legal hurdles. While there is still a long administrative process ahead, the Santa Úrsula City Council now has a defined plan to transform the long-neglected site into a modern, functional sports center.
