Santa Cruz will increase control over Los Charcos de Valleseco due to vandalism.
Santa Cruz will strengthen control over Los Charcos de Valleseco, fining vandals and restoring damaged property by the end of the year, following numerous complaints about destruction and safety issues.
Santa Cruz will take action against vandals who are damaging Los Charcos de Valleseco. The City Council will increase police control and fine those who destroy property.
In addition to increasing the number of police officers, the authorities promise to restore everything damaged by vandals. This was announced by the mayor of the city, José Manuel Bermúdez, during a visit to the recreation area. He was accompanied by other representatives of the City Council and the port administration.
"We have seen how everything here has been smashed by those who do not respect public space," Bermúdez said. "We will restore everything by December of this year. The police have already been instructed to fine offenders."
Carlos Tarife, the councilor for municipal affairs, added that some elements will be replaced with more durable ones, for example, the handrails will be made of steel, and the flooring in the showers will be improved. The cost of the work is still being assessed, but they promise to do everything by the end of the year.
Gladys de León, responsible for the Anaga district, assured that in addition to restoration, security will be strengthened. "We want to protect those who respect this place and come here to relax with their families," she said.
The City Council is already purchasing materials for repairs so that Los Charcos can be restored as soon as possible. The authorities urge residents to take care of the property and report cases of vandalism.
This summer, there have been injuries and safety issues at Los Charcos de Valleseco. People complained about broken handrails, stairs, and mold on ramps for people with disabilities. Rescuers even closed some areas and reported accidents, especially on platforms near the sea.
In addition, fights often occur between groups of young people in Los Charcos. Residents believe that it is necessary to check the condition of the recreation area more often and repair damage in a timely manner.
As a reminder, Los Charcos de Valleseco was opened in March 2024. At that time, the port administration handed it over to the Santa Cruz City Council, which is now responsible for maintenance.
