Santa Cruz Transport Interchange Begins €1.82 Million Modernization Project
The Santa Cruz de Tenerife transport interchange has launched a €1.82 million, seven-month modernization project to double its escalator capacity and upgrade electrical infrastructure for its 60,000 daily passengers.
The Santa Cruz de Tenerife transport interchange is undergoing a major upgrade as work begins on its vertical mobility systems. After more than 20 years of service, the facility’s escalators and infrastructure are being modernized to better serve the nearly 60,000 passengers who use the hub every day.
The Island Council has awarded a €1.82 million contract to Schindler S.A. to overhaul and expand the building's transit capacity. Over the next seven months, the project will double the number of escalators from four to eight, ensuring two-way traffic on all levels. The work also includes a necessary technical upgrade to the building's low-voltage electrical network.
To keep the station running during construction, the work will be completed in stages. The main entrance from Avenida Tres de Mayo is currently closed, and passengers are being directed to the elevators and stairs in the south wing, near the Adán Martín Auditorium.
Mobility Councilor Eulalia García acknowledged that the construction will cause some inconvenience. To help travelers navigate the changes, the council has installed new signage and maps to guide users to the tram platform on the second floor, which currently requires a short walk outside the building.
This project is part of a broader effort to ensure the transport hub meets modern accessibility and efficiency standards. The island administration has thanked the public for their patience while these essential improvements are carried out.
