Santa Cruz to Widen Pedestrian Bottleneck at Key Intersection
Santa Cruz de Tenerife has initiated plans to widen a narrow sidewalk at the intersection of Juan Pablo II Street and the Rambla to improve pedestrian accessibility.
Pedestrian access at a key intersection in Santa Cruz de Tenerife is set to improve. The City Council’s Urban Planning Department has begun the process of modifying a private plot at the corner of Juan Pablo II Street and the Rambla, where a perimeter wall currently forces pedestrians into a narrow space.
The goal is to widen the sidewalk in this area to match the rest of the street, a project already outlined in the city’s General Urban Development Plan. The Planning Service has now issued the necessary official documentation to address this bottleneck.
Councilwoman Zaida González explained that the project will follow standard land-use regulations. The City Council is currently weighing two options: the local government could handle the expropriation and construction, or the landowners could choose to cede the land and complete the work themselves. The latter is likely, as it is a requirement for the owners to receive their first occupancy license once new buildings in the area are finished.
This project highlights the challenge of balancing private property with the need for public accessibility. By addressing this long-standing issue, the city aims to finally improve pedestrian flow on one of its busiest streets.
