The Santa Cruz City Council has launched a €300,000 project to transform a dirt lot on Avenida Los Príncipes into a formal, 130-space parking facility to address chronic shortages in the Chimisay neighborhood.

Parking shortages in Santa Cruz de Tenerife have long been a point of tension between residents and the local government. To address this, the City Council has begun the process of turning a municipally owned plot on Avenida Los Príncipes, in the Chimisay neighborhood, into a formal, regulated parking lot.

The project, budgeted at nearly 300,000 euros, will transform the current makeshift dirt lot into a paved facility. This upgrade will increase the site’s capacity from 70 vehicles to 130. The plans are currently open for public review for 20 days, a necessary step before the project goes out to tender. If the process proceeds without any formal objections, the council expects the new parking area to be ready by October.

This initiative in the Ofra-Costa Sur district is part of a wider city strategy to ease parking problems by utilizing public land. Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez noted that similar projects are planned for other high-demand areas, including La Salud, Las Moraditas, Tíncer, and near the Pancho Camurria pavilion, where the city plans to relocate its vehicle impound lot.

Carlos Tarife, the Councilor for Public Services, noted that the use of the Avenida Los Príncipes site has shifted significantly. While previous administrations had considered the land for police facilities or social housing—projects that were eventually moved elsewhere—it will now be used to meet a long-standing neighborhood need. District councilor Santiago Díaz-Mejías added that, following the recent installation of street lighting, the new paving and signage fulfill a historic request from Chimisay residents for a safe, functional parking space.
