Santa Cruz de Tenerife has approved a 1.5-million-euro renovation project, funded by El Corte Inglés, to repair structural water damage and modernize the square above the Avenida Tres de Mayo parking garage.

The square above the El Corte Inglés parking garage on Avenida Tres de Mayo in Santa Cruz de Tenerife is set for a major renovation starting next year. The city council approved the project to fix structural issues that have caused persistent water leaks and dampness across the garage’s four underground levels.

The 1.5-million-euro project will be funded and managed through a public-private partnership. While the city owns the 572-space parking facility, El Corte Inglés holds a 75-year concession to operate it, with 25 years already passed. As part of their agreement, the company will finance and carry out the repairs under municipal supervision.

Work is expected to take nine months. The plan includes removing the current surface to install a new waterproofing system and replacing the drainage pipes. To protect the garage roof, a heavy kiosk-terrace structure will be removed. The renovation will also feature new shaded areas and two replacement kiosks, which the city will put out to tender later.

City officials believe the project will resolve long-standing maintenance problems while modernizing a key urban hub. The retail company, which pays an annual fee of over 16,000 euros to operate the parking lot, noted that the upgrades will improve safety, renovate the access stairs, and better organize pedestrian traffic between the nearby commercial buildings.
