The Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council has commissioned the demolition of a dilapidated municipal building on Juan García Álvarez Street to expand public space and improve pedestrian access in the Salud-La Salle district.

The Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council has hired the firm Excavaciones y Desmontes Estévez Méndez to demolish a city-owned building at 20 Juan García Álvarez Street. The project, which will cost nearly 40,000 euros, is part of a plan to turn the Salud-La Salle district into a more pedestrian-friendly area.

The demolition will take about six weeks and marks the end of a structure built in 1936. The 150-square-meter building, which contained three housing units, was previously acquired by the city through compulsory expropriation—a legal process that allows local governments to take over private property for public use or urban development.

The building’s poor condition made the demolition necessary. Beyond removing a deteriorating structure, the project follows the city’s General Urban Development Plan. The site will eventually be used to reconfigure the intersection of Juan García Álvarez and José Escuder streets, creating more public space and improving pedestrian access in the neighborhood.
