Santa Cruz to Begin Resurfacing Avenida Islas Canarias on Monday
Santa Cruz de Tenerife begins a multi-phase resurfacing project on Avenida Islas Canarias this Monday, causing significant traffic disruptions and public transport detours through the end of August.
Starting this Monday, August 10, Santa Cruz de Tenerife will begin resurfacing Avenida Islas Canarias, one of the city’s busiest roads. The project, which will last until the end of the month, is part of the "Impulso Urbano" initiative—a long-term plan to upgrade over 100 streets by 2027 with a total investment of more than 100 million euros. This specific intervention will cost 269,110 euros.
The work focuses on the lanes running alongside the tram tracks between Rambla de Santa Cruz and Avenida de Venezuela. To manage the complexity of the project, the city has divided the construction into seven phases. Drivers should expect significant disruption, including 24-hour road closures in active work zones and the removal of street parking. Crews will remove over 9,000 square meters of old pavement and cobblestones, replacing them with 1,319 tons of new asphalt and updated road markings.
Traffic will be diverted throughout the project, with signposted detours using Avenida de La Asunción, Avenida de Bélgica, and Calle Zurbarán. During the first phase, Calle Salamanca will be closed. As work moves toward the Avenida de Bélgica roundabout, a temporary traffic circle will be installed to keep vehicles moving.
Public transport will also be affected. From 7:30 a.m. on Monday until Wednesday, August 12, Titsa bus line 904 will follow a detour toward Cuesta Piedra. During this time, the Álvarez de Lugo, Rambla Pulido, and Salamanca stops will be closed, with temporary stops available at Plaza de los Patos, Sagrado Corazón, and Horacio Nelson.
Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez and Public Services Councilor Carlos Tarife stated that these improvements are essential for road safety and comfort. Local authorities are urging drivers to stay alert, follow all temporary signs, and exercise caution while navigating the area.
