Santa Cruz Revamps Sculpture Center, Showcasing Open-Air Museum
Santa Cruz de Tenerife has reopened its Sculptures in the Street Visitor Center in García Sanabria Park to promote the city's extensive sculpture collection.
Santa Cruz de Tenerife has reopened its revamped Sculptures in the Street Visitor Center in García Sanabria Park. The goal is to encourage people to explore the city's impressive collection of sculptures.
The center, previously an information point, now serves as the perfect starting place to discover the artworks from the international sculpture exhibitions held in 1973 and 1994.
The reopening was attended by Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez, Culture Councilor Santiago Díaz, María Nieves Febles (dean of the College of Architects), and Carlos A. Schwartz from the Sculptures in the Street Commission.
Febles highlighted that these sculptures have transformed the city into an open-air museum for over 50 years, featuring works by famous artists like Martín Chirino, Óscar Domínguez, Henry Moore, and Joan Miró. Schwartz added that the center preserves valuable information about the sculptures from the international exhibitions, enhancing Santa Cruz's cultural significance.
The updated design allows visitors to learn about the original sculptures, even those no longer on display. An interactive model, a map, and mobile displays with information and images are available. The aim is to promote and appreciate the city's sculptural heritage through educational activities.
Designers María Requena and Alicia Cárdenes, in collaboration with the College of Architects and the Sculpture in the Street Commission, created the new exhibition design, building on the original 2014 concept. Zebensuí Melián produced the exhibition, creating a space that sparks curiosity and encourages visitors to actively learn about the sculptures.
The City Council emphasizes that this project demonstrates its dedication to promoting art and culture in public spaces.
