Santa Cruz Residents Protest High Costs and Poor Management of Public Parking

The El Perenquén neighborhood association has filed a formal complaint against Santa Cruz de Tenerife’s public parking management, alleging that high costs and unreliable access prioritize corporate profit over resident needs.

The management of public parking in Santa Cruz de Tenerife is under fire following a formal complaint from the El Perenquén neighborhood association. The group argues that the current system prioritizes corporate profits over the needs of residents, sparking a debate about how the city oversees outsourced public services.

The association’s report highlights significant issues at key locations, including Plaza de España, Plaza del Pilar, Plaza Weyler, and the Ramón y Cajal extension. According to the findings, monthly parking passes are either unavailable or prohibitively expensive. At Plaza Weyler, for example, weekly passes cost 110.70 euros, pushing the monthly total to over 440 euros.

Beyond the high costs, the service is often unreliable. Even those who pay for monthly access are not guaranteed a parking space; they must compete with casual drivers for spots during peak hours. Residents also report a lack of transparency, citing hidden pricing, missing signage, and the requirement to provide bank details just to view basic service terms.

With private parking alternatives in the city center already costing around 140 euros per month without guaranteed space, parking has become a major burden for those living and working in the capital. Residents are now calling on the City Council to intervene and regain control over these concessions, arguing that infrastructure built with public funds should serve the community rather than maximize private profit.
