Residents of Santa Cruz de Tenerife are urging the municipal government to implement a strategic revitalization plan to address the urban decay, infrastructure failures, and business closures affecting the Ramblas area.

The Ramblas of Santa Cruz de Tenerife—specifically the Santa Cruz and Pulido areas—have fallen into a state of decay that local residents say requires urgent action. The neighborhood association, led by Reynaldo González, warns that the area is becoming unsustainable due to a decline in local businesses and the closure of landmarks like the Cine Víctor and Teatro Baudet.

Residents point to several compounding issues. The infrastructure is over 60 years old and fails to meet modern accessibility standards. Furthermore, the area is struggling with sanitation and security concerns, including issues with waste management, pests, and the misuse of abandoned buildings. Locals argue that these problems stem from a lack of civic responsibility and require a firm response from the municipal government.

According to the neighborhood association, simply increasing cleaning or police patrols is not enough. They are calling for a strategic plan to revitalize the area, suggesting improvements such as new public parking and incentives for restaurants and outdoor dining. They also see potential in repurposing underused sites, like the bullring, and believe the upcoming CaixaForum at Viera y Clavijo Park could serve as a catalyst for growth.

The Santa Cruz City Council is beginning to address these concerns through its Commerce Transformation Plan. The city is currently cataloging over 400 vacant properties to help new entrepreneurs move in, while also planning artistic improvements for storefronts. Despite the area’s strategic location and tram access, it has stagnated over the last decade. Residents are now calling for stronger political commitment to restore the district to its former prominence.
