Santa Cruz Residents Demand Urgent Action Over Safety and Infrastructure Issues in Ofra-Nuevo Obrero
Residents of the Ofra-Nuevo Obrero district in Santa Cruz de Tenerife have formally petitioned the City Council to address urgent concerns regarding traffic congestion, sanitation, and the restoration of public facilities.
Tensions are rising in the Ofra-Nuevo Obrero district as residents from Juan Albornoz Sombrita, La Estrella, Rodríguez Santos, and Sargentos Provisionales have formally complained to the Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council. The neighborhood platform argues that ongoing structural and management issues are severely impacting local safety and quality of life.
A major concern is emergency access. Residents report that vehicles blocking the road on La Estrella Street prevent ambulances and fire trucks from moving freely. To solve this, the group is calling for a traffic reorganization and the reopening of Las Flores Street to help ease congestion.
The residents also highlighted problems with public and private space maintenance. They are concerned about a vacant lot filled with waste and overgrown vegetation, which they fear poses a health risk. Additionally, they have requested an official review of several curb cuts on La Estrella and Rodríguez Santos streets, questioning whether they were authorized legally.
The list of demands also addresses social and public order issues. Residents are reporting disturbances caused by informal parking attendants, particularly at night. Furthermore, they are urging the council to reopen the ground floor of the Nuevo Obrero Civic Center, which has been closed and is currently unavailable for community use.
These conflicts reflect the ongoing challenge of managing traffic, sanitation, and public facilities in densely populated areas. Residents say the situation has become unsustainable, and they are now waiting for the Santa Cruz City Council to provide a decisive response.
