Santa Cruz Residents Demand Action as Cruz del Señor Neighborhood Faces Security Crisis
Residents of the Cruz del Señor neighborhood in Santa Cruz de Tenerife are demanding that the city council enclose the local square to address rising insecurity, antisocial behavior, and the degradation of public spaces.
Social cohesion in the Cruz del Señor neighborhood of Santa Cruz de Tenerife has reached a breaking point, putting municipal services and local police under immense pressure. As reported by Diario de Avisos, the area around the church square has become a hotspot for insecurity and marginalization—a chronic issue that residents say current police efforts are failing to address.
The neighborhood is struggling with the constant occupation of public spaces by vulnerable individuals, alongside rising reports of drug use, drug trafficking, and the illegal sale of items scavenged from trash. This has led to the decay of public property and the accumulation of debris, clothing, and household goods, creating unsanitary conditions that are severely impacting the quality of life for local residents and business owners.
Tensions have been further fueled by reports of aggressive and antisocial behavior from an individual living near the Zurita bridge. Despite increased patrols by the Local and National Police and the local church’s decision to install fencing to prevent people from sleeping in its doorways, the cycle of occupation continues.
Frustrated by these ineffective temporary measures, the community has formally asked the Santa Cruz City Council to enclose the square. The situation in Cruz del Señor highlights a broader, structural challenge for local authorities: balancing the need to support the homeless with the public's right to safe and peaceful shared spaces. In this neighborhood, that balance has clearly been lost.
