Santa Cruz has re-launched the over €1.7 million tender for the island's first large Pump Track at the Los Gladiolos sports center, simplifying requirements to attract bidders after an initial process failed.

Santa Cruz is still determined to build the island's first large Pump Track. This special track is a closed circuit with wavy paths, perfect for wheeled sports like biking, roller skating, skateboarding, and scootering. The area will also include green spaces, shaded spots, and places for people to relax. The plan was to build this facility at the Los Gladiolos sports center. It was first offered for bids last September, but no companies showed interest, so the tender was cancelled.

Because of this, the city council met yesterday and decided to re-launch the bidding process. They approved the contract for the renovation, upgrade, and redesign of the Los Gladiolos sports center, which will house the new Pump Track. The project has a starting budget of over 1.7 million euros and is expected to take 12 months to complete. Funding will come from the Government of the Canary Islands and the Cabildo de Tenerife.

The council also approved the project's administrative and technical details. They will now open the tender using a simpler process, after reviewing the requirements to encourage more companies to bid and speed up the contracting.

Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez explained, "We've adjusted and simplified the requirements so that more companies can submit bids, while still ensuring the quality and safety of the work. We want this important project for the Los Gladiolos neighborhood to move forward quickly and with full transparency."

Alicia Cebrián, the Councilor for Sports, stressed how important the new bidding process is. She said, "Updating the specifications helps us attract more bidders and move forward with a much-needed facility that will improve the city's sports options. Los Gladiolos deserves a sports center that reflects the high level of sports activity in the area."

Cebrián added that "this project will not only improve the existing building but also allow us to rethink how we use the sports space. It will become more functional and adaptable to various sports, strengthening Santa Cruz's network of sports facilities and encouraging sport and physical activity as a way of life."

The councilor also noted, "We will be creating the capital's first sports track specifically for roller skating and skateboarding, which can also be used by bikes and scooters. On top of that, the Pump Track area will include smaller spaces for public recreation, traditional sports, and green, shaded spots."

Zaida González, the councilor for the Salud-La Salle district, commented that "this renovation shows a clear commitment to improving sports facilities. It will give the district a modern, accessible space that meets today's needs."
