The Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council and the CSIF union have reached an agreement to reactivate the Police Intervention Unit after the union dropped a lawsuit challenging the unit's selection process.

The Police Intervention Unit (Unipol) in Santa Cruz de Tenerife is set to return to service after the City Council’s security department and the CSIF police union reached an agreement. As reported by Diario de Avisos, the union has dropped the lawsuit that had previously stalled the selection process for the unit, clearing the way for its reactivation.

The dispute began in mid-July over how the City Council was selecting officers for the unit. The CSIF argued that the process did not follow the transparency and fairness standards agreed upon in 2023. For the union, sticking to these rules was essential to ensure that all officers were treated equally and selected based on merit.

Under the new agreement, the City Council has committed to strictly following the terms previously negotiated. Jesús Illada, a union delegate, explained that this decision does not mean they are giving up on oversight, but rather choosing a practical way to resolve the conflict. He emphasized that collective bargaining agreements must be respected and cannot be changed at the discretion of the administration.

This situation highlights the balance between creating specialized security units and ensuring that hiring processes are legally sound. By dropping the lawsuit, the City Council can now move forward with its security plans, while the union has secured a commitment that future appointments will honor the agreements made to protect officers' professional rights and opportunities.
