A police dog unit in Santa Cruz de Tenerife led to the arrest of a 41-year-old man found carrying 2.2 kilograms of hashish in his backpack during a routine patrol.

Police dog units have once again proven their worth in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, where local police made a large hashish seizure. Last Tuesday evening, a 41-year-old man, identified as J.F.G.G., was arrested. He was carrying 2.2 kilograms of hashish, split into four packages, in his backpack.

The arrest happened during a routine patrol at the corner of Valentín Sanz and La Palma streets. A police dog from the Canine Unit spontaneously reacted, alerting its handler to the man. When stopped, the man admitted he had the illegal drug. Because of this, a National Police unit was called in to help with security checks and to examine what was inside the backpack.

Besides the large amount of hashish, police found personal items on the man, including documents, airline tickets for that same Tuesday, a mobile phone, and 50 euros in cash. After the drug was officially weighed and initial paperwork was done, J.F.G.G. was taken for a medical check-up. He was then moved to police headquarters and handed over to the judicial authorities for legal proceedings. This event highlights how important specialized police units are in fighting drug trafficking, both small and medium-scale, across the islands.
