The Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council has approved a zoning change for the North Dock, now allowing shops, services, and specialized port-related educational activities in an area previously restricted to industrial use, to meet industry training demands.

The Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council's planning department has approved a major change for the North Dock. This decision will redefine how this port area develops. Previously, land here was only for industrial use, but now it can also be used for shops, services, and, significantly, educational activities.

This change was pushed by the Santa Cruz Port Authority. It aims to meet the growing demand for skilled workers in the shipping and port industry, and also responds to interest in setting up training programs within the port area. Councilor Zaida González explained that the specific changes focus on expanding the types of activities allowed. The main goal is to make it easier to establish training centers specifically for jobs related to the port sector.

The plan includes creating schools to train students in subjects directly related to sea and port work. However, to keep the area's main purpose intact, there's a clear rule: any schools built must offer training specific to the port industry. Also, they can only be built in certain areas, either alongside existing industrial businesses or on dedicated plots. This is to ensure the area's primary role isn't lost.

The planning department's report, which will now go to the Environment Commission, is a small update to a document the Port Authority prepared for the Port's Special Plan, whose base document dates from 2025. Once all the paperwork is done and it's published in the Official Gazette of the Canary Islands (BOC), this flexibility will create new opportunities for economic growth and specialized training in Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
