Santa Cruz Mayor Pledges Security Boost for Troubled Neighborhoods
Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez met with residents in Santa Cruz de Tenerife to address severe insecurity and coexistence issues caused by addiction and crime, promising increased police coordination and social services intervention, alongside considering mobility improvements.
The neighborhoods of El Perú, Divina Pastora, Villa Ascensión, and Cuesta Piedra in Santa Cruz de Tenerife have been struggling with significant issues of insecurity and coexistence. This stems from the ongoing presence of people with addiction problems who frequent the area. These individuals often consume substances in public, cause brawls, engage in uncivil acts, damage public property, illegally occupy buildings, and commit robberies and thefts, affecting both homes and businesses.
The situation is made worse by the presence of women involved in prostitution and other vulnerable individuals, turning these areas into sources of conflict and keeping residents on edge.
To tackle these concerns, Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez and Zaida González, the councilor for the Salud-La Salle district, met with residents and community representatives on Eladio Roca Salazar street. The purpose was to understand the situation and listen to proposals regarding mobility and road safety that residents are calling for.
Mayor Bermúdez announced that they would "strengthen coordination with the Government Subdelegation and the police forces to act decisively and improve security in the area." He added that "social services will intensify their intervention to promote care and reintegration processes."
Regarding mobility, residents requested the installation of smart pedestrian crossings, raised crossings to reduce traffic speed, a roundabout at a problematic intersection, and the creation of a bus stop.
