Santa Cruz Mayor Open to Franco Monument Removal, Demands Law Adherence
Santa Cruz de Tenerife Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez announced he is not against removing the Franco monument but insists on the precise application of the Canarian Law of Historical Memory, believing it was not correctly applied in past rulings.
The mayor of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, José Manuel Bermúdez, announced on Friday that he is not against removing the monument known as the Franco monument from the city. He stated he has "no doubt" about what it represents.
However, Bermúdez told the media that he insists on the application of the Canarian Law of Historical Memory. This law was unanimously approved by all political groups in the Parliament of the Canary Islands.
"What I am saying is that the law should be applied exactly as it is written," he stressed. He also admitted that he believes, based on past court rulings, that "the law was not applied as it should have been."
