The Masonic Temple of Santa Cruz de Tenerife has officially resumed Masonic activities following a three-million-euro restoration, marking a historic return for the organization nearly 90 years after its forced closure during the Franco regime.

The recent solemn session held at the Masonic Temple of Santa Cruz de Tenerife was more than just a ceremony; it was a significant moment of historical healing. The return of this building to its original purpose marks the end of a long period of exclusion for Freemasonry in the Canary Islands—a history defined by decades of persecution and the temple’s forced use as a military pharmacy during the Franco regime.

The event brought together over 80 members of the Grand Lodge of the Canary Islands, alongside international delegations from France, Portugal, and various Scottish Rite organizations. This gathering was made possible by a three-million-euro public investment to fully restore the building. Since its reopening as an interpretation center last October, the site has finally been able to host Masonic activities again, nearly 90 years after they were first interrupted.

For the Grand Lodge of the Canary Islands, the meeting was both a tribute to democratic memory and a reaffirmation of the core values of freedom and fraternity. Grand Master Carlos Berástegui Afonso emphasized that while the temple’s operations were forced to stop, the members kept these principles alive privately throughout the years. The event was supported by the Santa Cruz City Council, reflecting a shared commitment to preserving this unique piece of local heritage.

As the only building of its kind in Spain, the Masonic Temple holds national importance. By restoring it as a space for reflection and work, the Masonic community hopes to weave its legacy back into the cultural life of the islands. The attendance of high-ranking international Masonic leaders highlights the global significance of this recovery, cementing the temple’s status as a vital historical and ethical landmark.
