Santa Cruz Launches Road Safety Upgrades Near GOFit Sports Complex
Santa Cruz de Tenerife has launched a 28,554-euro road improvement project near the GOFit sports complex to enhance pedestrian safety and accessibility through new crossings and infrastructure upgrades.
A new urban development project near the GOFit sports complex in Santa Cruz de Tenerife highlights the challenges of managing traffic around busy facilities. The City Council’s Mobility Department has begun road improvements at the intersection of Heliodoro Rodríguez López Street, La Mutine, and Bernardino Semán, an area that has seen a significant increase in visitors since the sports complex opened.
The 28,554-euro project is expected to take four weeks to complete and focuses on installing two new pedestrian crossings. These crossings are designed with universal accessibility in mind, ensuring they meet modern standards for people with visual impairments or reduced mobility. Key features include tactile paving to act as a sensory guide and updated curb ramps to improve safety.
Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez stated that the work is a direct response to safety concerns in the area. Evelyn Alonso, the councilor for the district, added that the project is essential for making it easier and safer for pedestrians to cross the road. The plan also includes expanding the central traffic island to provide a safer refuge for pedestrians amidst heavy vehicle traffic.
These small-scale urban improvements reflect the ongoing challenge local governments face in balancing vehicle flow with pedestrian safety in areas where new businesses and sports facilities have changed how people travel.
