Santa Cruz Launches Initiative to Transform Nuestra Señora de África Market into Cultural Hub
Santa Cruz de Tenerife is hosting a special event at the Nuestra Señora de África Market on May 2nd, featuring family activities and promotional prizes to revitalize the historic site as a cultural and commercial hub.
Santa Cruz de Tenerife is launching a new initiative to turn the Nuestra Señora de África Market into a vibrant hub for shopping, culture, and leisure. On May 2nd, the City Council will host a special event celebrating both Mother’s Day and the city’s founding festivities.
Organized by the Development Society and the Market Cooperative, this project is part of the Santa Cruz Commercial Master Plan (2023–2028). The goal is to move beyond traditional retail by creating a social experience that helps local markets compete with large shopping centers and online retailers.
The event will run from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. around La Recova and the Rambla Azul. Customers who spend over 10 euros can participate in a "flower roulette" to win instant prizes. Families can also enjoy craft workshops for children aged 4 to 9, storytelling sessions, and themed photography areas.
Supported by Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez and Development Society CEO Carmen Pérez, the event aims to boost local business during the busy holiday season. This strategy builds on the success of previous events, such as the January 17th celebration, which drew over 650 children. To mark the occasion, the market’s central courtyard will be decorated with flowers in honor of the traditional May Crosses.
