Santa Cruz Launches €1.9M Emergency Project to Stabilize Las Gaviotas Coastline
Santa Cruz de Tenerife has launched a €1.9 million emergency stabilization project to address geological instability and rockfalls that forced the closure of the road and access to Las Gaviotas beach.
Santa Cruz de Tenerife has launched an emergency project to fix geological instability near Las Gaviotas beach, prioritizing road safety and public access to the coastline. The City Council declared an emergency after rockfalls forced the closure of the access road and surrounding area a week ago.
To address the site's complex terrain, the council has allocated 1.9 million euros to Tacande Geotécnica and Wara Ingeniería Ambiental. The project is expected to take twelve months to complete, with a 30-day preparation phase before heavy machinery arrives on-site.
The stabilization plan involves a thorough analysis of the hillside, mapping critical danger zones, and installing physical containment measures. Engineers will also audit existing protection systems, such as mesh and barriers, and use drones to monitor the rugged landscape.
By using an emergency procedure, the City Council can bypass standard bidding delays to address these safety risks quickly. The road and beach area will remain closed until the stabilization work is finished.
