Santa Cruz City Council is investing €515,463 to modernize the 60-year-old Acidalio Lorenzo public swimming pool by July, transforming it into a more functional and accessible facility with extensive renovations.

Santa Cruz City Council is making a significant investment to modernize the Acidalio Lorenzo public swimming pool, a facility that's over sixty years old. The council states that the project aims to transform the venue into a more functional and accessible space, meeting the current needs of users and sports clubs.

The city's Sports Department began the work last January, with a budget of 515,463 euros, and expects to finish by July. The main focus of the project is to remove architectural barriers and generally improve how the facility is used.

Key improvements include renovating the complex's entrance area, installing an elevator, and completely updating the shared changing rooms, expanding them from two to eight sections. Additionally, one of the spectator stands, currently closed due to structural risk, will be torn down and replaced with movable seating. The plan also includes creating a new first-aid room, a modern access control point, and a technical office.

The Sports Department has worked closely with the sports clubs that use the facility to arrange their temporary relocation. They have provided spaces for storing equipment and a shared workspace for administrative tasks.

Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez emphasized that these updates are essential and a top priority to ensure the swimming pool is accessible, safe, and fully operational. He also mentioned that plans are being developed for a larger, long-term renovation of Acidalio Lorenzo. Sports Councilor Alicia Cebrián acknowledged the technical and administrative challenges involved in improving city sports facilities. She highlighted the effort made to keep the pool open during construction, ensuring that club training sessions, individual users, and activities from the Santa Cruz Entrena program were not interrupted.

The councilor also announced that in the coming months, steps will be taken to ensure the pools are at the appropriate temperature and to optimize the climate control system. This will improve performance in windy conditions when thermal covers cannot be used. The demolition of the stand is scheduled for early 2027.
