The Cabildo de Tenerife has invested over 240,000 euros to upgrade the Sergio Rodríguez Pavilion, reinforcing its commitment to modernizing local sports infrastructure and supporting inclusive athletics.

Santa Cruz de Tenerife is continuing its efforts to modernize public infrastructure with recent upgrades to the Sergio Rodríguez Pavilion. The island’s government has allocated 240,922 euros to the project, which is part of a broader strategy managed by the public company Ideco to improve safety and operational standards at local sports facilities.

Since opening in 2008, the pavilion has been a vital hub for the capital’s sports community. It serves as the home base for the Santa Cruz ADEIN Tenerife Fundación CB Canarias, a leading team in national wheelchair basketball. These improvements are essential to ensure the facility meets the high-level requirements of inclusive, competitive sports.

During a recent site visit, Cabildo de Tenerife Vice President Lope Afonso and Minister of Sports Yolanda Moliné noted that this investment is part of a larger commitment. Over the past three years, more than 980,000 euros have been invested in the Ofra sports complex, including a previous 502,000-euro renovation phase. This ongoing plan aims to extend the lifespan of facilities that are central to the island’s community life.

Managing public sports venues is a constant challenge, as local authorities must balance heavy daily use with evolving safety and accessibility regulations. By providing this new funding, the Cabildo aims to support both grassroots and professional sports, ensuring that the fifteen-year-old pavilion remains a cornerstone of Tenerife’s athletic infrastructure.
