Santa Cruz Imposes New Traffic Restrictions on Calle Centenillo to Improve Safety

The Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council has introduced new traffic restrictions on Calle Centenillo, a road connecting El Tablero and Llano del Moro, to improve road safety and preserve the neighborhood’s character. The decision follows requests from local residents, who raised concerns during a recent meeting with district councilor Javier Rivero.

The Department of Mobility and Universal Accessibility has implemented a technical reorganization of the road. The weight limit for vehicles has been reduced from seven tons to 3.5 tons, and restrictions on vehicle width have been introduced. These changes aim to discourage heavy trucks from using the road, which was not designed to handle such traffic.

To enforce these rules, the Local Police will increase patrols at key locations, including the intersections of Calle Centenillo with Calle Toledo and Calle Talavera. Officers will issue penalties to any drivers who fail to comply with the new regulations.

Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez stated that the move is intended to protect the El Tablero district and prevent its residential streets from becoming major transit routes. Mobility Councilor Evelyn Alonso encouraged drivers to use alternative island roads or the TF-2 instead, noting that resident safety must take priority over shorter travel times. Javier Rivero added that Calle Centenillo had been incorrectly used as a shortcut between the south and San Francisco de Paula, a practice the council deems incompatible with the safety and quality of life of the local community.
