Santa Cruz Honors Lord of Tribulations in Historic Holy Tuesday Procession
The historic Holy Tuesday procession of the Lord of Tribulations drew large crowds in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, uniting the El Toscal neighborhood through deep-rooted traditions and community-led floral tributes.
The Holy Tuesday procession of the Lord of Tribulations in Santa Cruz de Tenerife is more than just a religious event; it is a defining moment for the El Toscal neighborhood. The statue, which has been part of the city’s collective memory since the late 19th century, once again drew large crowds this week.
The deep devotion to the image stems from its historical role in ending the 1893 cholera epidemic. Seen as a protector of the city, the statue inspires widespread community involvement. This year, the Centro-Ifara district distributed a thousand roses to local businesses, allowing residents to shower the procession with petals from their balconies as it passed.
The procession began at the parish of San Francisco de Asís at 8:15 p.m. Due to construction on Calle La Rosa, the route had to be adjusted. The procession traveled through Villalba Hervás, Valentín Sanz, Plaza de El Príncipe, Suárez Guerra, Puerto Escondido, San Clemente, Santiago, San Francisco Javier, and San Miguel, before turning onto Calle Señor de las Tribulaciones and finishing on La Rosa. Near the Hogar Escuela, the image was honored with a choral tribute before returning to the church.
The day was further marked by the neighbors’ tradition of creating intricate carpets on the street, adding to the solemn atmosphere of Holy Week. This blend of historical significance, active community participation, and local tradition confirms the procession as one of the most important cultural events in the city’s calendar.
