The historic grain silo in Santa Cruz de Tenerife is set to be preserved and repurposed for public use after experts confirmed the structure is sound and officially designated it a Property of Cultural Interest.

The old grain silo in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, once destined for demolition, is finally set to be preserved. Recent inspections by Cultural Heritage experts from the Canary Islands government and the Port Authority have revealed that the building is much sturdier than previously thought, clearing the way for its restoration and eventual public use.

This marks a significant change in direction for the Port Authority. Previously, the agency had argued that the silo was too damaged and commercially unviable to save. Now, they have agreed to work with heritage officials to protect the site. This new agreement also covers other historic landmarks in the port area, including the Cory dock, the Bufadero battery, and the La Alegría tunnels.

The main challenge now is how to repurpose a building originally designed as a sealed industrial space. Historian Amara Florido, who is preparing a technical report on the project, notes that the goal is to integrate the silo into the city’s urban life. Doing so would preserve a vital piece of Spain’s post-war industrial history, especially now that the building has been declared a Property of Cultural Interest (BIC), which has officially halted its destruction.

While the final details of the agreement are still being settled, experts have confirmed that the silo is structurally sound despite some surface damage and neglect. This project signals a new approach: instead of viewing industrial heritage as an obstacle to progress, the port is now treating these unique structures as valuable assets for the community.
