Santa Cruz Food Competition Boosts Neighborhood Commerce and Community Engagement
Santa Cruz de Tenerife’s "Ruta del Bocadillazo" culinary competition successfully boosted local commerce and neighborhood engagement in the city's Southwest district, with Delicias Maru, Cafetería Peti Azul, and Cafetería Alisios taking the top honors.
Santa Cruz de Tenerife’s local food scene is proving to be a major draw for residents, with the recent "Ruta del Bocadillazo" successfully boosting business in the city's neighborhoods. The competition, organized by the Development Society and the Southwest district, saw the same three favorites take the top spots as last year: Delicias Maru, Cafetería Peti Azul, and Cafetería Alisios.
The event highlights a shift in how the city manages local leisure, focusing on bringing activity to areas outside the busy city center. With 31 businesses participating and over 1,000 people signing up online, the initiative supports the city's broader plans for commerce and tourism. Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez noted that the event’s success goes beyond sales; it has effectively encouraged residents from across the city to visit and explore the Southwest district.
The winners were chosen by 902 public votes, with the top three establishments receiving cash prizes of 200, 150, and 100 euros, respectively. To further encourage local spending, the organizers also raffled off 60-euro gift vouchers to customers, helping to support local businesses and reward loyal patrons.
Javier Rivero, the district councilor, emphasized the social impact of the event, describing it as a way to strengthen neighborhood identity. As part of the "Enjoy the Districts" program, the local government is using these public-private partnerships to highlight the potential of peripheral areas, using food as a way to bring the community closer together.
