Santa Cruz de Tenerife Wins National Award for Urban Greening Strategy
Santa Cruz de Tenerife has been awarded the national Parjap 2026 prize in recognition of its excellence in urban green infrastructure and biodiversity management.
Santa Cruz de Tenerife’s urban greening strategy has earned national recognition after winning the Parjap 2026 prize, awarded by the Spanish Association of Public Parks and Gardens. The award honors the city council for its excellence in planning, developing, and managing public botanical spaces—a priority that has become central to the city’s agenda in recent years.
The jury specifically highlighted the city’s "Green Infrastructure and Biodiversity Plan," a roadmap designed to make the urban environment more resilient to climate change. For local officials, the award validates the hard work of the Public Services department and establishes the city as a national leader in urban ecosystem management.
Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez welcomed the award as proof that the city’s environmental policies are working, noting the importance of balancing urban growth with the protection of natural heritage. Carlos Tarife, head of the Public Services department, added that the recognition confirms the city’s strategic planning is at the forefront of the industry.
This award underscores the growing pressure on cities to meet European sustainability standards. As urban centers evolve, green infrastructure is increasingly seen as a vital measure of public health and quality of life.
