Santa Cruz de Tenerife Unveils €4 Million Education and Extracurricular Expansion Plan
Santa Cruz de Tenerife has announced a 4 million euro investment to expand extracurricular programs and implement specialized support for vocational students to improve academic outcomes and reduce dropout rates through 2031.
Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council has unveiled its education plan for 2026-2027, focusing on expanding student support and improving after-school activities. Following a meeting between Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez, Education head Charín González, and local school administrators, the government announced a restructuring of its public services to better support both academic achievement and family life.
The city is investing 1.9 million euros over the next four years to overhaul its extracurricular program. Key changes include doubling sports sessions from two to four days a week and extending academic tutoring to secondary schools (IES) for the first time. This builds on the current program, which already serves 1,458 students across 32 centers with a mix of study help and physical activity.
To address school dropout rates, the council has also launched a separate 2.1 million euro contract running until 2031. This initiative includes a new, specialized protocol for students in Basic Vocational Training, a group identified as being at higher risk of leaving school early.
These measures reflect the city’s commitment to meeting the growing demand from families for reliable, high-quality support outside of school hours. By working closely with school leaders, the City Council aims to ensure these services are tailored to the specific needs of each center, helping to close the gap in access to educational and sports opportunities for all students.
