Santa Cruz de Tenerife Unveils 15-Year Urban Development Roadmap
Santa Cruz de Tenerife has finalized a 15-year urban development roadmap prioritizing the "Port-City" waterfront integration and tram network expansion to drive sustainable growth through 2040.
Santa Cruz de Tenerife has finalized its urban development roadmap for the next 15 years. Following a consultation process with 60 business and social organizations, the City Council has established a clear set of strategic priorities. This planning initiative, supported by the Metrópoli Foundation and the Moeve Foundation, aims to move past theoretical ideas and create a practical, long-term action plan.
The consensus centers on two primary goals for mobility and connectivity. The "Port-City" project, which aims to better integrate the waterfront with the rest of the city, was ranked as the top priority with a score of 9.1 out of 10. It is seen as essential for redefining the capital’s relationship with the ocean and creating new economic opportunities. Close behind, with a score of 8.8, is the expansion of the tram network, which is viewed as the best solution to ease traffic congestion and improve airport access.
Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez stated that the project, which began a year ago, is designed to ensure the city’s future development is sustainable. Carlos Tarife, head of Strategic Planning, added that this document is not just a report, but a practical guide for municipal management through 2040.
The planning process narrowed down 14 initial proposals to a final set of goals. Alfonso Vergara, president of the Metrópoli Foundation, noted that the project’s success will depend on how well public and private sectors work together to make these plans a reality. Teresa Mañueco, director of the Moeve Foundation, emphasized that collective effort is vital to solving the city's challenges as the project moves from the design phase to the practical hurdles of budgeting and administration.
