Santa Cruz de Tenerife to Restrict Fomento Street to Public Transport to Ease Congestion

Santa Cruz de Tenerife is set to reorganize its traffic flow to improve urban mobility. The city council has announced plans to dedicate a 150-meter stretch of Fomento Street exclusively to buses and taxis. This change aims to clear up the frequent traffic jams near the city’s main transport interchange, a busy area close to major shopping centers.

Evelyn Alonso, head of the Department of Mobility and Universal Accessibility, explained that separating public and private vehicles will help buses run on time while smoothing out traffic for private drivers. Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez added that this project is part of a wider effort to make public transport a more attractive and efficient alternative to driving.

Fomento Street was chosen because it serves as a key exit route for buses leaving the interchange toward the El Corte Inglés roundabout. While the council has yet to announce a start date for the work, the street was successfully used for public transport during a trial run last June.

This project is part of a larger plan to modernize the city’s transport network. The council is currently finalizing a 30-million-euro tender to upgrade the bus fleet with 61 new vehicles, including 40 hybrids and 17 electric buses. This investment, which has drawn interest from 15 companies, sits alongside recent improvements to bus schedules and routes, as well as ongoing work to make bus stops more accessible for all passengers.
