Santa Cruz de Tenerife to Reinstate Unipol Police Unit with €689,000 Investment
The Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council has approved a 689,000-euro investment to modernize equipment and restore the Police Intervention Unit to city streets by the end of the year.
Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council has begun the process of returning the Police Intervention Unit (Unipol) to the city’s streets. The local government recently approved a 689,000-euro investment to get the specialized unit back on patrol in local neighborhoods by the end of the year.
Most of the budget is dedicated to modernizing the unit’s equipment and technology. The council has set aside 260,127 euros to provide 30 officers with new tactical gear, including protective shields, helmets, expandable batons, personal recording cameras, and specialized ammunition.
Additionally, 286,000 euros will be spent over the next four years to upgrade communications. This includes providing 285 portable radios equipped with GPS tracking and advanced digital network capabilities. The final part of the plan involves a 144,000-euro leasing contract to provide four new vans for the Local Police and two for Civil Protection.
Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez stated that these contracts are the first step in ensuring the police force has the resources it needs. Security Councilor Gladis de León added that this investment is part of a wider strategy to improve municipal services and strengthen public safety. The goal is to have a specialized team capable of handling complex situations while maintaining a consistent, preventive presence across the city’s districts.
