Santa Cruz de Tenerife is partnering with local taxi associations to allow private vehicles to park in designated taxi stands during late-night hours to alleviate the city's parking shortage.

Santa Cruz de Tenerife is planning to change how it manages urban space at night to help ease the city’s parking shortage. According to El Día, the City Council is working with local taxi associations, Élite and La Gremial, to allow private vehicles to park in taxi stands during late-night hours when demand for taxis is low.

Led by Mobility Councilor Gladis de León, this initiative is designed to make better use of limited parking for residents while maintaining a good working relationship with the taxi industry.

The plan will be rolled out gradually. Depending on the location, taxi stands will be open for general parking either from 9:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. or from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. However, there will be exceptions: taxi stands near hotels and healthcare centers, where demand remains high around the clock, will remain reserved for taxis at all times.

Zebenzuí Pérez, president of La Gremial, confirmed that the taxi sector is happy to cooperate to help solve the city’s parking issues. To make this work, the council will need to update traffic signs to clearly show when these areas transition from taxi-only zones to general parking.

The success of the project will rely on clear scheduling and effective communication with drivers. By adopting this flexible approach to road space, Santa Cruz de Tenerife is following the lead of other cities looking for smarter ways to improve traffic flow and local quality of life.
