The Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council is investing 800,000 euros to install solar-powered shaded seating at eight municipal sports venues, aiming to improve facility conditions while advancing the city's sustainability and clean energy goals.

The Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council is launching a plan to upgrade its municipal sports facilities, focusing on energy efficiency and better conditions for the public. The strategy centers on installing shaded seating areas at eight sports venues, which will also feature solar panels to generate clean energy for local use.

This project, known as "Lot 3," has a budget of 800,000 euros and covers the fields in El Draguillo, El Sobradillo, El Tablero, and Santa María del Mar. Once the contract is awarded, the work is expected to take three months. The new metal canopies will provide much-needed shade for spectators and athletes while helping the city reduce its reliance on the power grid and meet its carbon reduction goals, with support from ERDF funding.

This move is part of a broader commitment to sustainability in the capital. It follows a previous 6.8 million euro investment, managed alongside the island council, which upgraded turf and facilities at six other locations: Juan Santa María, García Escámez, Los Gladiolos, El Tablero, La Salud, and Las Delicias.

Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez stated that these improvements are key to modernizing public services. Carlos Tarife, the Councilor for Strategic Planning, highlighted the importance of turning existing infrastructure into assets that produce clean energy. The city is already drafting plans to bring this energy-efficient model to the fields in Tíncer, Barranco Grande, Añaza, and Llano del Moro, as part of a long-term effort to make better use of public spaces in the face of changing climate needs.
