Santa Cruz de Tenerife will install modular, removable sun protection along its main shopping street to improve pedestrian comfort during hot weather while preserving the area's historical character.

Santa Cruz de Tenerife is set to transform its main shopping street to help pedestrians cope with rising temperatures. The City Council has approved plans to install sun protection along the route from Plaza Weyler to Plaza de La Candelaria, which includes the busy Calle Castillo.

The project, which has a budget of 107,829 euros, is part of a broader strategy to adapt the city to a changing climate. Rather than installing permanent fixtures, the council has opted for a modular, removable design. This approach ensures the city’s historical character is preserved while allowing the space to be easily adjusted for future needs.

Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez stated that the project is part of a plan to make the city center more comfortable and livable. Carlos Tarife, head of Public Services, confirmed that the design has received all necessary technical and heritage approvals. Once a contractor is selected, the work is expected to take ten months to complete.

This initiative follows a growing trend in Spanish urban planning, which focuses on creating "microclimates" to make walking more pleasant during hot weather. By choosing removable structures, the city aims to improve comfort for shoppers and visitors without permanently altering the appearance of this historic commercial area.
