Santa Cruz de Tenerife Sees Record Participation for Upcoming May Festivals
Santa Cruz de Tenerife’s May Festivals are seeing record-breaking participation, underscoring a revitalized commitment to the city’s cultural traditions across all generations.
Local traditions in Santa Cruz de Tenerife are thriving, with city council data for the upcoming May Festivals showing a significant surge in interest. These celebrations have become more than just a party; they are now a vital part of the city’s social life and cultural identity.
The festivities officially kick off on April 21 with an opening speech by writer and actress Marta González de Vega. This year, a record 85 people have signed up for the various competitions. Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez described this high level of participation as a sign that the traditions are healthy and deeply rooted, reflecting a generational commitment that the local government is eager to support.
The main events will take place in the Plaza de La Candelaria between April 24 and 26. The opening day will feature 35 candidates competing for the title of Adult Queen, directed by Paula Álvarez. Javier Caraballero, the Councilor for Festivals, highlighted the success of the Senior Queen gala, which has grown rapidly since its debut last year. After starting with nine participants, the event has reached its maximum capacity of 20 candidates for 2026, a milestone the council views as a success in its effort to represent a wider range of people.
The festival concludes on Sunday, April 26, with the election of the Child Maga and Mago. With 20 girls and ten boys competing, the event highlights the festival's ability to attract participants of all ages, ensuring that these cultural traditions continue to grow and evolve.
