The renovation of Santa Cruz de Tenerife’s Avenida de Anaga is entering a critical phase as the city council works to resolve six-month delays that have forced long-standing local businesses to close.

The renovation of the Santa Cruz de Tenerife seafront is entering a critical stage after months of uncertainty. The city council confirmed that materials for the Avenida de Anaga pavement are set to arrive next week, which will allow work on the area's final layout to move forward.

The project is currently six months behind schedule due to unexpected structural issues, particularly with the foundations for the planned coastal viewpoints. These delays have hit local businesses hard. Javier Lu Sin, owner of the China restaurant, has announced a 30-day closure—the first in the business's 60-year history—stating that the construction work has made his restaurant inaccessible and financially unsustainable.

Javier Rivero, the councilman for Works and Infrastructure, aims to have the area back to normal by July. While the Avenida de Anaga project is intended to modernize the coastline, it highlights the difficult balance between urban improvement and supporting existing businesses. Large-scale construction projects often face intense scrutiny, as long-term disruptions to foot traffic and visibility frequently create tension between city officials and local business owners, who often call for better planning and more realistic timelines.
